If you need to get a small gift for someone and you’re choosing between a ‘cedarwood and vanilla‘ soap set , a box of regiftable ‘shortbread’ or a foodie gift they’ll actually thank you for , but that’s also pocket friendly , I’ve got to recommend a jar of this @garnacha_ireland Peanut Salsa.

I met Andrew and Andrea of Garnacha when I was a judge at the @lionsdenevent_ earlier this year and they gave me some of their salsa range to sample . In their own words they are starting a salsa revolution-
“ we want to bring the vibrant flavours and rich cultural heritage of Mexico to every table. We seek to ignite a salsa revolution, where people embrace the bold and spirited nature of this condiment, transforming ordinary meals into extraordinary culinary adventures”

The salsas are truly fresh , vibrant and lip-smackingly tasty , but hands down our family favourite was the peanut one - so much so that in 2 days all that was left in the jar were the scrapings where the spoon couldn’t quite get to the last morsel .
A jar of Peanut Salsa might seem too much like a grocery item to be a gift, but I promise you - it’s a real treat .
Plus you are buying from a genuinely nice couple who are at the start of their food business journey , and buying from them is so much more satisfying than buying a nondescript soap selection, or a tin of dodgy biscuits .

We really have to start normalising delicious food gifts - at all price points !

The one thing that’s absolutely essential for a delicious Christmas is a fridge full of Irish farmhouse cheese.

There’s so many really high quality Irish cheeses ( I was honoured to be a judge at this years @blasnaheireann , in the cheese category, and it really underlined how lucky we are to have such a world class selection)

It’s almost impossible for me to pick my favourite Irish cheese but there are a couple that are simply so outstanding that I can almost conjure up the memory of tasting them at any time.

However memories won’t be sufficient on the Christmas cheeseboard, so, along with a couple of others that I’ll be suggesting closer to Christmas, my shopping list at the cheesemongers will definitely include Crozier Blue from @cashelfarmhousecheese . Fans of Cashel Blue will already know what I’m talking about , the creamy, salty, umami delight that arrives like a slab of blue veined marble , yet when pressed and spread with a cheese knife is like thick, milky-white & blue crushed velvet . The flavour from the organic/bio selection is even richer and more distinctive - but for me the real treat is the Crozier Blue. Made from Irish sheep milk, it’s an absolute top tier cheese. The folks at @cashelfarmhousecheese say that sheep’s milk is known to cheesemakers at the platinum of milks.

I had the pleasure of meeting Co-owner Sarah Furno when I hosted the Meet the Maker stage at @blasnaheireann in Dingle a few months ago and was delighted that she included Crozier Blue for the audience tasting .

If you want to treat yourself or someone you love to an extra special treat this year , this is the one for anyone whose love language is Irish cheese💚🧀

Next up on my list is something that needs to go on every Christmas list ever !
Lorraine from @daisycottagefarm is better known as the #bakinggoddess . She appears at festivals around the country throughout the year and has legions of loyal fans who arrive early to be sure to get hold of her delicious baking - a vast repertoire of time honoured classics .

It’s at Christmas however that demand for Lorraine’s baking reaches fever pitch . Her Christmas cakes are always so adorably decorated, her puddings are luscious, her gingerbread and Christmas treats are like something from a fairytale.

BUT it’s her LEGENDARY mince pies that are now an essential part of my Christmas. With her homemade mincemeat and her delicious pastry , and the perfect pie to filling ratio, these mince pies make the perfect gift , in their cute little boxes. She even does a gluten free version. These are among the best mince pies you’ll ever taste ( trust me, I’m an expert! )

Lorraine does a super range of Christmas and year round gifts including her fantastic ‘bread in a bottle ‘ an exceptional variety of soda bread and scone mixes that have already been highly acclaimed. For the budding baker , these make a perfect gift.

Lorraine is a great friend of mine💚 but even if she wasn’t I would highly recommend this range , made with love in a Wicklow farmhouse kitchen .

It’s Friday evening so I thinks it time to mention this one . 🍸

I absolutely love elderflower. I love picking it , I love the fragrance, I love making cordial and I love the taste . I couldn’t possibly make enough for myself so my go-to is always @richmount_cordial . I choose either the cordial for myself at home or the presse if it’s for a gift . Elderflower cordial is so versatile, added to sparkling water or mocktails or cocktails .

The one thing that’s really been missing from the Irish drinks cabinet though is an Irish Elderflower Liqueur.
And wouldn’t you know the folks at @richmount_cordial have just solved that - their absolutely beautiful Elderflower Liquer has just launched and it’s just what I’ve wished for 💛 .

Its elegant, fragrant, and silky on the palate. Just look at that beautiful bottle . I’m want to pull out my antique silver tray at Christmas and serve it in some dainty liquer glasses. with some wintry jazz playing on vinyl.

I want to stir it into refined Christmas desserts, imagine making an Irish version of Zagablione with this ? !!?
I want to buy some rich Irish cream and free range eggs and make an ice cream to pour this over ,

I want to recreate cocktails and make this elderflower liquer the ⭐️ ingredient.

But mostly I want to sip it undiluted from a pretty glass by a roaring Christmas fire.

I’ve tasted some amazing oysters this year … and more about those later , but if you wanted to send a Christmas hamper to someone and you wanted to include oysters .. it’s finally possible . Heres a super , delicious and innovative option! Sligo Oysters launched these ‘Pickled Oysters’ this year and I was thrilled to have a pre-launch taste. They are absolutely sublime , there’s 6 hand shucked pickled oysters in each jar and they come in 2 flavours - ‘Water Mint and Lemon Balm’ and ‘Wild Blackberry.’ The packaging is stunning, with echoes of the gorgeous Sligo landscape. They are pickled in @wildwoodvinegars which incidentally, also make stunning gifts .

They’d make such a perfect gift , they don’t need refrigerating before opening , they don’t even need shucking , they are ready to serve with some gorgeous Irish brown bread and butter and would be delicious with a glass of stout or Irish whiskey .

A gift of local honey would be welcomed by anyone . For me local honey is Wicklow honey and I’m spoiled for choice with OpenHive and Wildacres to name a few . But the ultimate treat is the Heather Honey from @ollysfarm .
Olly Nolan keeps beehives in the Dublin/Wicklow Mountains and his Heather Honey is simply exceptional. The texture is so rich and decadent and the flavour is so floral, it tastes like a gasp of mountain air when you’re on top of the hills. The perfect treat for Christmas for yourself or an ideal gift.

At approx €15 it fits nicely into a lot of Kristkindl gift budgets, and for the quality of this honey that’s an excellent price .

Stirred into Christmastime breakfasts, added to a hot toddy , or served with an Irish cheeseboard, it’s perfect but you’ll probably end up just eating it off the spoon! It’s that good…and really good for you. Indulgent and healthy 💚✅

As always I’m only recommending things that I would buy for my own kitchen press or as a gift and this is high up on my repeat buy list for both 🍯

Ever since I stocked @micschilli in my little food store in Enniskerry over 12 years ago, my whole family have been fans. The range has expanded since then to include ‘Hotchup’ and a host of super 🌶️🌶️🌶️sauces . If you’ve got a chilli lover in your life check out the full range but I guarantee EVERYONE will love this bottle of Inferno Jnr. It’s got enough heat and flavour to make every dish just that little bit tastier- we put it on eggs , into soups, onto cheese, roasted veg, I’ve even put it in cocktails .

Start off on Jnr and you’ll soon be working your way up the Inferno ladder through ‘Lite’ , ‘Original’ and ‘Extreme’. But there will always be room in the kitchen press for a bottle of ‘Jnr’.

First up in my gift guide is @fattomato__ by @anthonyotoole_ who describes the produce of his edible garden as a range “driven by curiosity, biodiversity and flavour “.

I was lucky enough to try some of the gorgeous preserves when he launched his honesty shop in the summer. It’s hard to pick a favourite but the Peach and Honey Jam and the Bottled Heritage Tomatoes have been some of the most delicious things I’ve tasted this year .
Anthony’s commitment to growing over 500 varieties of fruits and vegetables without the use of chemicals and his unwavering attention to detail in the kitchen where he creates his range of preserves has resulted in a larder full of flavour.

Not only is Anthony a committed gardener and a talented chef but he has an eye for aesthetics that makes his range perfect for gifting. The packaging is exquisitely understated and elegant. There are some really unique stocking fillers and KrisKindl gifts in here … who wouldn’t love to receive something like Bloody Mary Salt for their Christmas cocktails.?

As these are home grown and handmade by Anthony many are limited edition, and that’s why I’ve listed this first . Don’t delay in getting your hands on these gifts and treat yourself to something special too.

Why are @blancsvalencia and I dressed as 1940’s housewives ?

Our latest @artplate_ie ‘Plates and Palettes ‘ Food in Art event at The National Gallery of Ireland took place this week .

This time we explored the connection between artist Louis Le Brocquy and cookery writer Maura Laverty.
Le Brocquy actually illustrated her 1940’s cookbook “Maura Laverty’s Cookery Book “ ( Kind Cooking) .

After visiting some of his iconic works in the Gallery including ‘A Family’ and ‘The Triumph of Chuchulainn’ , we moved to the beautiful dining space at No 5, where we had set the long table in the form of a timeline of Maura Laverty’s life and work. (The lemons represented her collaboration with Le Brocquy. !) 🍋 thanks so much to @thesheddistillery for the lemon props !
Once again I was so proud to use some of my Nana Birdie’s kitchen utensils in our display . She was born in 1911, 4 years after Maura Laverty, so I imagine Maura may have used a weighing scales just like this one.

Maura Laverty was a multi-hyphenate: a controversial novelist and playwright, she is credited with penning Ireland’s first TV drama Tolka Road. She was also a prolific food writer and radio show hostesses. Her cookbooks Flour Economy and Full and Plenty were enormously successful.

In this event we paired food from Laverty’s books to understand how she created an audience of Irish food lovers in the US by pioneering Irish ingredients. We also explored her love affair with Spain where she lived and which is the setting of her novel No More than Human, looking at how she interpreted foreign recipes for Irish audiences. Echoing Laverty’s work,highlighted Irish modern producers and their creations. We were delighted to include @valentiaislandvermouth and @ballykeefedistillery

Our menu which was beautifully crafted by @jtorresbueno and his team at The National Gallery, we are so grateful for his interpretation of our ideas .

Stunning piece of beef from @stewartsbutchers. I hadn’t intended buying beef yesterday when I wandered into this very attractive butchers and deli while on a brief visit to Enniskillen , but the way butcher Daniel talked about the beef, the traceability, and the aging process, there was no way I was leaving it behind . This piece has been aged for 3 months !!!!! …and I won’t lie - I felt pressure today to cook a meal to do justice to the Angus beast , the farmer and the butcher .
I also picked up some of this incredibly delicious smoked garlic from Shane’s Smokehouse which I roasted with the potatoes . The beef and the garlic are definitely in the top ten things I’ve tasted this year . Sublime.

👏Congratulations to the organisers of @samhainfestivalkells - @centreoffoodcultureboynevalley for a yet another fantastic weekend in Kells.

I was invited to take part in 2 events ; the first was at , ‘The Samhain Symposium’ at the Culinary Court , to discuss the food networks of Ireland,; I represented @wicklownaturally

The second was to present another @artplate_ie event in @theredchapel - an absolutely stunning venue in the heart of historic Kells. This time we presented some Irish art with a related menu using mostly Boyne Valley food and drinks produce.

🏨I stayed at the gorgeous @headfortarms Arms in the centre of town and I’m really looking forward to a return visit . Highly recommend a stay here and the adjoining @vanillapodkells restaurant is excellent. I was delighted to catch up with Orlaith Murphy here who hasn’t changed in the 20 + years since I’ve last seen her💚

🙏Thanks to my lovely pal Kate O Hora aka @thecake_table and @tarawalkerchef2 for coming to see our Art Plate event, and to @anthonyotoole_ who was such a help and didn’t run away when I mentioned that I needed 30 @carlingfordoysters shucked 10 minutes before showtime ! He’s a pro !

I got some very nice food gifts recently, including these @wildirishgame venison cutlets, some Irish homegrown fruit & veg including beautiful sweet red apples , gorgeous candy striped beetroot, garlic, herbs and parsnips .

It was the perfect excuse to make an effort with dinner . I served the cutlets medium rare with creamed parsnip & parsnip game chips, glazed candied beetroot cubes , fondant potatoes (with a mini gratin made from the offcuts - that’s @spacey_chef influence - make sure you check out his ‘Wasted’ book 😉)
Gravy made with @fattomato__ apple jelly to cut through the venison, although in fact the venison flavour was very mild - I’m convinced I could taste heather from the 🦌 diet in the Wicklow Mountains .

I’ve been so inspired since seeing the fabulous recipes created by Niall @nadurcollective from @killruddery , @the.fanatical.forager , @ainedonegan @lepaysanwicklow @criochcatering at our recent @wicklownaturally venison event ( please check them out and give them a follow!! )
They are actual chefs with real skill and talent , Im just a home cook with occasional notions but watching @martin.s.butcher venison demonstration recently has really inspired my to try to use this nutritious, super tasty and hyper local ingredient more!

Thank you so much to everyone who joined @blancsvalencia and I at the National Gallery of Ireland yesterday evening for our @artplate_ie Plates and Palettes event.

It was a dream come true for both of us to curate and host this evening

We visited 4 paintings, each representing a different style of Irish hospitality spanning different centuries and social classes .

We then invited guests to sit at 4 different tables which were styled to represent each painting .
The paintings chosen were

The Hellfire Club;
Mass in a Connemara Cabin;
Davy Byrne’s Pub, Dublin, from the Bailey
Donnybrook Fair

The menu was inspired by details from the paintings and featured some of our favourite artisan Irish producers . The food was created by John and the brilliant kitchen team and served beautifully by the fantastic events team at the gallery.

Some of my favourite menu details were from the 1940’s menu of one of the featured paintings- including a mini mixed grill and curried eggs .
The individually wrapped Coolattin Cheddar wedges delighted everyone!

We wanted to champion Irish producers and retailers throughout , including Irish crafters and were delighted to serve these Mayan Gold potatoes ( balls of flour!) from
the traditional potato skibs made by @wicklowwillow .

To represent the revellers in The Hellfire Club we served Scaltheen made with @fercullenwhiskey served in beautiful @tuathglass 🥃

Thanks also to @enniskerryantiqueswicklow for the amazing props, particularly for those which we used to recreate the pub scene.

I especially loved styling the ‘Mass in a Connemara Cabin ‘ table using my late Nana Birdie’s “priests tablecloth” which I always remember being used for the priests’s visit ( one of the themes in this painting, which is so familiar to many Irish people )
It brought me great joy to use her tablecloth in this beautiful setting - I wonder what she would have made of it all.

Sometimes I get the opportunity to organise events that really capture my imagination.
So it was with this one, which I called a
‘Vision for Venison’

We gathered so many people from different perspectives into this beautiful space @numbertwelvebray .

We looked at Wicklows deer population from the viewpoints of biodiversity managers , conservationists, hunters , farmers, butchers , chefs, food tourism specialists, foragers, artists .

We tasted the most stunning venison dishes from our talented Wicklow chefs

And then we dined on a supper made entirely of Wicklow produce served up with Wicklow drinks including the delicious Wicklow Wanderer cocktail made by @oisindavis .

What I loved most about this event was everyone’s enthusiasm to participate so generously and to treat the subject of deer management and venison so respectfully .

A moment for the stunning venue where we hosted a #visionforvenison earlier this week.

@numbertwelvebray is the most perfect space for intimate events , product launches , tastings and demos with an incredibly versatile layout and a vast range of food styling props

And the best bit? It’s just across the road from Bray Dart Station so it’s super accessible.

My favourite part of the day as always , was dressing the table in this elegant room .

To reflect the natural habitat of the Wicklow deer I chose a simple setting with a centrepiece of herbs from @ohanlonherbs , potted heathers from @powerscourtgardenpavilion, with some Wicklow inspired candles from @avocaireland . By coincidence the colours in this beautifully decorated room echoed the granite, gorse, hedgerow and heather colours of County Wicklow .

I will have many more photos to share of our Vision for Venison event yesterday in County Wicklow , but for now I’ll just share this photo of the legendary @martin.s.butcher who prepared the carcass so skilfully and respectfully as if he was creating a work of art . It was captivating to watch.
